"Yes, Virginia, there IS...": Campaign to Restore and Exhibit Virginia Terpening's Artwork

Help The Hinge restore Virginia Terpening's artwork from years of neglect!

Virginia Terpening (b. Missouri, 1917-2007) is one of the Midwest's few mid-century female painters to be nationally recognized and exhibited. Last spring, her entire collection of paintings, sketches, and illustrations were suddenly unearthed from the Lewistown, Missouri, trailer in which she spent her final days. The Riverfront Times made a big splash featuring this discovery as its October 11 cover story (http://www.riverfronttimes.com/2013-10-10/culture/virginia-terpenin...), but ensuing attempts to auction her oeuvre were unsuccessful. Who will save this important regional artist from senseless obscurity? Who will rescue her reputation--her paintings, sketches, and legacy?

Enter: The Hinge. Heralded by St. Louis Magazine as the city's Best New Art Gallery in 2013, The Hinge (www.thehingestl.com) has long championed the under-dog genius, whether it be Poland's Ryszard Kaja or overlooked talent from the St. Louis area. On November 18th, Virginia Terpening's work went up for auction, and the bidding was something fierce! The Hinge successfully obtained a number of her works, as chronicled by the RFT the following week (http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/dailyrft/2013/...). Teaming up with other area auction winners, The Hinge is now confronted with the challenge of restoring and presenting work that has suffered years of neglect. And we can't do it alone.

A labor of love in every sense, The Hinge has heretofore been funded solely through the grit and gusto of its cofounders. Funds raised from this Indiegogo campaign will go directly to paying for the professional restoration of Virginia Terpening's artwork and its framing and installation for our January 25th exhibition.
